Abstract:
In an introductory post-secondary mathematics course, the backgrounds and motivation of students may be quite diverse, making it challenging to meet the needs of everyone. Students with weaker backgrounds might become frustrated with material seeming to pose an unrealistic challenge, perhaps causing them to drop the course, while stronger students might not be pushed enough to realize their full potential. The result is that both sets of student may not be fully engaged in the learning process. One possible solution to this problem may lie with online technologies that allow students an individualized level of support. In this presentation we discuss technologies we have developed for interactive online assignments and to make online mathematical communication easier for students, as well as our experiences in using them to increase student engagement in mathematics courses.
Modelling and Simulating Drought Risk
Abstract:
In this talk we introduce stochastic models for temperature and precipitation for arid climates in order to model drought risk so as to improve food security. We validate the models by using historical weather data to simulate the price of hypothetical drought derivative contracts designed to protect agricultural producers from the negative financial impacts associated with drought.
